A small shop for solid wood

mutoumise keeps twenty objects — trays, vases, hooks, a few small tools — all of them cut from solid hardwood, none of them urgent. We would rather know each piece well than carry a hundred we don't.

01 — Why solid wood

Material that keeps time

Veneer wears through and plastic simply ages. A piece of solid walnut or beech does the opposite — it darkens a little each year, takes on marks from use, and grows a soft sheen where hands rest. We stock solid wood because it is one of the few materials that improves by being lived with.

It also asks something of you. Wood moves with the seasons, dislikes standing water, and remembers neglect. We think that small demand is part of what makes these objects worth keeping.

03 — How objects are chosen

Chosen, not churned

We are not the makers. We are the editors. We order samples, live with them for months, and keep only what still feels right after the novelty has worn off. Most candidates never make the shop.

What stays is finished simply — plant oil and wax as a rule, lacquer only where a design truly calls for it — then packed in plain paper and shipped from Canada.

02 — Wabi-sabi

Imperfection, on purpose

Grain is a record of weather. A knot, a shift in tone, a line where two seasons met — these are not defects to sand away, and we do not match pieces to a catalogue photo. The vase that arrives is the only one exactly like it.

The four woods we keep

If an object in the shop is not one of these four hardwoods, we do not carry it. A short list keeps us honest — and keeps every shelf in the store speaking the same quiet language.

04 — The bear

The mark on the parcel

The bear began as a pencil sketch on the back of a packing slip, and it never really left. A bear moves slowly, chooses carefully, and spends its whole life among trees — which is close enough to how this shop works that we kept it.

You will find it printed on every parcel, next to a stamped vermilion seal reading 木 — wood. If the bear is on the box, someone here has handled what is inside.
